- Restores movement with specific stretching and mobility exercises
- Strengthens the core and supporting muscles to stabilise the spine and reduce pressure on the nerve
- Improves posture and ergonomics to prevent recurrence
- Provides pain relief using proven techniques such as acupuncture, heat/cold therapy, and taping
- Offers a structured rehabilitation programme tailored to your lifestyle and goals — helping you return to work, sport, and daily activities safely and confidently
Sciatica usually causes pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and travels down one leg. It can feel like a sharp, burning, or electric-shock sensation, often with numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot. If your leg pain is worse than your back pain and follows the path of the sciatic nerve, it’s very likely sciatica.
Yes — physiotherapy is highly effective for the vast majority of people with sciatica. Research shows that 80-90% of cases improve significantly with conservative treatment (manual therapy, specific exercises, and posture correction) without needing surgery. At Complete Recovery Physio Marple, we focus on relieving nerve pressure, restoring movement, and strengthening your core to prevent it from returning.
Recovery time varies depending on the cause and how long you’ve had symptoms. Many people notice significant improvement within 2–4 weeks of starting physiotherapy. Full recovery can take 6–12 weeks in most cases. The earlier you start treatment, the faster and more complete your recovery tends to be.
FAQs
Sciatica Frequently Asked Questions
The most common cause is a herniated or bulging disc in the lower back that presses on the sciatic nerve. Other frequent causes include spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, spondylolisthesis, and prolonged poor posture or sitting.
Diagnosis usually starts with a detailed history and physical assessment. Your physiotherapist will test nerve mobility, strength, sensation, and reflexes. In some cases we may recommend imaging (MRI) if symptoms are severe or not improving.
Gentle activity is usually better than complete bed rest. Short walks and specific movements help reduce nerve irritation and speed recovery. Total rest can actually make sciatica worse. We’ll guide you on safe movements at Complete Recovery Physio Marple.
The best exercises focus on gentle nerve gliding, core stability, hip mobility, and posture correction. Common ones include the McKenzie extension, piriformis stretch, and bird-dog. We create a personalised programme because the right exercises depend on your specific cause.
Yes. Prevention involves strengthening your core and glute muscles, improving posture, using correct lifting techniques, and avoiding long periods of sitting. Our physiotherapists will give you a tailored maintenance plan to keep your back strong.
The sooner the better. If pain has lasted more than a few days, is getting worse, or you have leg weakness/numbness, book an assessment straight away. Early treatment often prevents chronic problems.
Walking is generally very good for sciatica when done in short, frequent bouts. It promotes blood flow, gently mobilises the nerve, and prevents stiffness. We’ll advise the right amount and posture for you.
Yes — targeted soft tissue release, joint mobilisation, and nerve mobilisation techniques are very effective at reducing muscle spasm and nerve pressure. Many patients feel noticeable relief after the first few sessions.
Physiotherapy is often enough for most people. However, short-term medication (prescribed by your GP) can be used alongside treatment to control pain while we address the root cause. Our goal is to reduce your reliance on medication.
Seek urgent medical attention if you experience loss of bladder or bowel control, severe weakness in both legs, or numbness in the saddle area (inner thighs and buttocks). These can indicate cauda equina syndrome, which needs immediate care.
I had a deep tissue massage focusing on my back and legs, and it was absolutely amazing! The pressure was perfect, and I left feeling so much lighter and completely relaxed. I’m really pleased with the whole experience and will definitely be coming back again. Highly recommend!

After just 4 sessions, I've been given some strength-building and stretching exercises which have reduced my pain massively and reduced the effect on my day-to-day life. I'm now in a much-improved position where I can continue to self manage and I'm confident it will only continue to improve.
Rob is friendly and knowledgeable and his facilities are professional and welcoming. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him if you need any support!
and set me up on an app that gave me a neck program to complete each day, which does help. Booked an appointment easily through the website and have had multiple appointments with Rob, who is brilliant, and is helping me to recover from a sporting injury.
There is a really useful triage assessment that you can complete on the website. I found this to be really good.
