Hip Pain
Hip pain can come from the joint, the tendons, the muscles or the back — and the right treatment depends on the exact source. We assess precisely and rebuild strong, pain-free hip movement at our Marple clinic.

Understanding Your Condition
The hip is a deep, complex joint surrounded by powerful muscles and tendons, and pain in this area can come from many different structures — the joint itself, the tendons, the muscles, the bursa, or even referred from the lower back. Getting the diagnosis right is the first step to effective treatment.
At Complete Recovery Physiotherapy in Marple, we assess precisely to identify the source of your hip pain and build a targeted plan to settle it and restore strong, comfortable movement. Hips respond very well to the right treatment — once we know exactly what we're dealing with.

What You Feel
- Pain in the groin, side of the hip, buttock or thigh
- Discomfort walking, climbing stairs or getting up from a chair
- Pain lying on the affected side at night
- Stiffness in the hip, especially after sitting
- A clicking, catching or locking sensation
- Pain with running, sport or prolonged standing
- Reduced range of movement in the hip
- A limp or feeling the hip 'won't support you'
Common Causes
- Hip osteoarthritis and joint wear
- Gluteal tendon problems (greater trochanteric pain)
- Hip flexor strain or tendinopathy
- Groin strain or adductor problems
- Bursitis around the hip
- Referred pain from the lower back or sacroiliac joint
- Labral tear or hip impingement (FAI)
- Weakness and imbalance in the hip and glute muscles
Who Physiotherapy Can Help
Hip pain affects people of all ages and activity levels. We help runners with lateral hip pain, older adults with arthritic hip stiffness, desk workers with tight, aching hips, and sportspeople with groin or flexor strains. Whether your pain is acute or has built up gradually, a precise assessment leads to effective treatment.
If your hip pain is affecting walking, sleep, sport or simply getting about, we'll find the source and get you moving comfortably again.
Struggling with Hip Pain?
Book your assessment today. We'll find the root cause and start hands-on treatment in your first session.
Your Assessment
Your assessment pinpoints the structure causing your pain. We assess your hip's range of movement, strength and the specific tests that reproduce your symptoms, screen for back involvement, and review how you walk and move.
Because hip pain has many possible sources — and they need quite different treatments — an accurate assessment is essential. We'll explain clearly what's causing your pain and design a plan matched to it.
How We Treat It
Our hands-on treatment approach:
- Detailed assessment to identify the exact source of hip pain
- Hands-on mobilisation and soft tissue treatment to ease pain
- Targeted strengthening of the glutes, hip and core muscles
- Mobility and flexibility work to restore full movement
- Advice on walking, running, sleeping and daily activities
- A progressive return to full, pain-free function
Expected Recovery
Recovery depends on the cause. Tendon problems typically improve over 6–12 weeks of progressive loading, arthritic hips respond steadily to strengthening and mobility work, and acute muscle strains settle within a few weeks.
Strengthening the muscles around the hip is central to most hip problems — a strong, well-controlled hip is far less painful and far more resilient. We give you a clear plan and realistic expectations for your specific condition.
Everything You Need to Know Before Booking
No GP referral needed. Direct access appointments available — often same-day or within a few days.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first session is a 45-minute comprehensive assessment. We start by listening — understanding your symptoms, your history, and what you want to get back to. We then carry out a thorough hands-on physical examination to identify the root cause of your problem. You'll receive a clear explanation of what's going on, a personalised treatment plan, and hands-on treatment begins in that very first session. You leave knowing exactly what's wrong, what we'll do about it, and how long recovery will take.
What Should I Wear?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area we're treating. For knee, hip, or leg problems, shorts are ideal. For shoulder, neck, or back issues, a loose top or vest works well. You'll never be asked to undress beyond what's necessary for examination and treatment, and you'll always be treated with dignity and respect in our private treatment room.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
This depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and your goals. Many patients feel significant improvement within 3–6 sessions. Acute injuries often resolve faster, while long-standing or complex conditions may need more. We'll give you a clear treatment timeline at your first appointment — and we only ever recommend sessions you genuinely need. Our goal is to get you independent and pain-free as quickly as possible, not to keep you coming back.
Can I Claim Through Insurance?
Yes. We are recognised by most major health insurance providers including AXA, Vitality, Bupa, WPA, and Healix. We can bill your insurer directly so you don't need to pay upfront — simply bring your insurance authorisation number to your appointment. If you're not sure whether you're covered, call us and we'll help you check before you book.
