Sports Physio

Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a dedicated athlete, or someone who simply loves staying active, sports injuries can be incredibly frustrating and hold you back from doing what you enjoy. At Complete Recovery Physio in Marple, Stockport, our specialist sports physiotherapy service is designed to help you recover fully, safely, and as quickly as possible.

We create a personalised recovery plan tailored to your specific sport, goals, and lifestyle. Our experienced physiotherapists will support and guide you through every stage of your rehabilitation, helping you return to full fitness with confidence while also reducing the risk of future injuries.

1. Who Benefits From Sports Physio?

Sports physiotherapy is suitable for anyone dealing with pain, injury, or performance issues linked to physical activity. We work with a wide range of individuals — from recreational gym-goers and runners to teenage footballers, weekend cyclists, and elite athletes.

Common conditions we treat include ligament sprains, muscle strains, tendinopathy, and joint pain (particularly in the shoulder, knee, and ankle), as well as post-surgical rehabilitation and recurring overuse injuries. We also support those looking to improve movement quality, optimise biomechanics, refine running technique, or return to sport safely after time away.

Whether you’re preparing for a marathon or simply want to enjoy a pain-free five-a-side game, our approach is tailored to help you move better, recover effectively, and perform at your best.

2. What Does Physiotherapy Involve?

Your first session begins with a comprehensive assessment of your injury, movement patterns, strength, and overall biomechanics. We’ll analyse how your body moves, identify any imbalances or weak areas, and create a tailored treatment plan aligned with your goals — whether that’s returning to sport, reducing the risk of re-injury, or improving performance.

Treatment may include a combination of hands-on therapy, joint and soft tissue techniques, taping, acupuncture, or shockwave. Most importantly, it will include a structured, progressive rehabilitation and strengthening programme designed to support long-term results.

We follow a clear, staged approach:
Phase 1 focuses on reducing pain and settling symptoms,
Phase 2 introduces targeted rehabilitation,
Phase 3 builds strength, control, and sport-specific resilience,
Phase 4 supports long-term maintenance and performance — often through a gym or home exercise plan. For some clients we continue with for structured rehabilitation support with 1:1 rehabilitation sessions in clinic on a weekly to monthly basis.

3. Benefits and Outcomes of Physiotherapy

The aim of sports physiotherapy goes beyond simply treating your current injury — it’s about reducing the risk of it returning. With the right combination of treatment and rehabilitation, you can recover more efficiently, ease pain, and restore full movement and function.

Our approach is tailored to your specific sport or activity, helping you come back stronger, more confident, and with a clearer understanding of how your body performs and responds to load. Many of our patients not only recover but go on to improve their performance and experience fewer injuries over time.

Whether you’re chasing a personal best or simply want to stay active without setbacks, sports physiotherapy is a valuable investment in your long-term physical health.

FAQs

Sports Physio Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is sports physiotherapy?

Sports physiotherapy focuses on the assessment, treatment, and prevention of injuries related to physical activity. It helps reduce pain, restore movement, and improve performance through a combination of hands-on treatment and targeted rehabilitation exercises.

2. Do I need to be an athlete to see a sports physio?

Not at all. Sports physio is suitable for anyone who is active or wants to be — from gym-goers and runners to people returning to exercise after injury or time off.

3. What conditions can sports physiotherapy help with?

We commonly treat muscle strains, ligament sprains, tendon pain (tendinopathy), joint pain (shoulder, knee, ankle), post-surgical rehabilitation, and overuse injuries such as runner’s knee or tennis elbow.

4. What happens during the first appointment?

Your first session includes a full assessment of your injury, movement, strength, and biomechanics. We’ll identify the root cause of your problem and create a personalised treatment and rehab plan.

5. How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your injury, goals, and how your body responds to treatment. Some people improve within a few sessions, while more complex or long-standing issues may require a longer rehabilitation plan.

6. Will I be given exercises to do at home?

Yes — rehabilitation exercises are a key part of recovery. You’ll be given a structured programme to follow between sessions to help speed up progress and reduce the risk of re-injury.

7. Does sports physiotherapy include hands-on treatment?

Yes. Treatment may include manual therapy, soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, taping, acupuncture, shockwave, or laser therapy — depending on what’s most appropriate for your condition.

8. Can sports physio help improve performance?

Absolutely. Beyond injury treatment, sports physio can help improve strength, mobility, movement efficiency, and biomechanics — all of which can enhance performance and reduce injury risk.

9. When can I return to sport after an injury?

Return to sport depends on your injury and progress through rehabilitation. We guide you through a staged recovery, ensuring you’re strong, stable, and confident before returning safely.

10. Do I need a GP referral to see a sports physiotherapist?

No — you can book directly without a referral. If needed, we can communicate with your GP or consultant as part of your care.

Rob was absolutely brilliant right from the first session. I had a very complex injury which he was able to advise on in a non-judgmental way. He is extremely knowledgable, helpful and was able to make so many individualised recommendations in terms of exercises and equipment. The support and advice he provided has made a HUGE difference and I really can’t recommend enough!

I had a deep tissue massage focusing on my back and legs, and it was absolutely amazing! The pressure was perfect, and I left feeling so much lighter and completely relaxed. I’m really pleased with the whole experience and will definitely be coming back again. Highly recommend!

Have been to see Rob twice now for a neck and shoulder strain and Robert asked me a number of questions to support some of the recovery methods he suggested. Rob was knowledgable, attentive and provided a very good massage around and on affected areas, which during the week helped my recovery. My second session was similar to the first and Rob checked affected areas for further tension and any pain.
I have to say since seeing Robert I have made a full recovery and very pleased with the result, happy I went to see him and wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Thanks again Complete Recovery Physiotherapy.

I would definitely recommend Rob at Complete Recovery Physiotherapy. I was a bit uncertain at first as to what to expect and how effective physio would be for me. Rob is extremely professional, and knowledgeable. He puts you at your ease and explains everything as he goes along. I am happy to say that after months if not years of not being able to turn my neck properly - I saw an improvement in two sessions and now I'm committed to continuing the exercises as my neck and back are improving week by week. Thank you Rob

I came to see Rob regarding ankle/foot/calf issue. I was using painkillers, hot/cold sprays, tubi grips. All this was adding up moneywise. I am so glad I decided to contact Rob rather than wait for months to be seen on the NHS. Within a couple of weeks of seeing Rob I had a great improvement, enough that I stopped the above selfcare. I can recommend Complete Recovery Physiotherapy .

Excellent! Rob began with a review where he made certain that he completely understood my medical history and my current problems. He then designed an exercise programme tailored to my needs. I have followed the programme and had 4 further physiotherapy sessions at my home with Rob, resulting in a significant improvement in my mobility and pain levels..
Rob is great guy, friendly, sympathetic and a good listener. He clearly knows his stuff. I strongly recommend him.

I'd been having trouble with my back for over a year and not had much luck with seeing the GP so did some research and came across Rob's services.
After just 4 sessions, I've been given some strength-building and stretching exercises which have reduced my pain massively and reduced the effect on my day-to-day life. I'm now in a much-improved position where I can continue to self manage and I'm confident it will only continue to improve.
Rob is friendly and knowledgeable and his facilities are professional and welcoming. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him if you need any support!

I contacted Rob because I was having pain in my neck. After two visits to him, I'm already starting to feel less pain. Rob gave me tips to keep the pain away.
and set me up on an app that gave me a neck program to complete each day, which does help. Rob is happy to answer any questions you may have and walk you through what he is going to do and how you can help yourself. If you're in pain, don't hesitate to contact Rob. You will thank yourself for it. Thanks for all your help, Rob.

I attended CR Physio after I fractured both my wrists and needed the extra input and assistance from Rob to manipulate my wrists. I found Rob to be extremely knowledgeable with information regarding the affected areas and efficient when it came to giving me an exercise plan. I would highly recommend Rob and wouldn't hesitate in contacting Rob in the future regarding any muscular problems or (hopefully not) breaks and fractures.

I went to see Rob in a lot of pain having been told by my doctor I had arthritis and that was that. It wasn’t arthritis; and after a thorough examination, I was given daily exercises. He put them on an app so they were really easy to follow and I could rate my pain. I very quickly started to feel better and now feel no pain and my strength is improving.
Very good and he was very helpful...and good advice
