What It Is

Introduction

Sports physiotherapy is a specialised branch of physiotherapy focused on the assessment, treatment, and prevention of injuries related to physical activity. It goes beyond general physiotherapy by considering the specific demands of your sport, your biomechanics, and your performance goals.

At Complete Recovery Physio in Marple, we understand how frustrating it is when an injury stops you doing what you love. Whether you're training for a marathon, playing weekend football, or simply enjoy a regular gym session, our sports physiotherapy service is designed to get you back to full activity — stronger and more resilient than before.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain during or after exercise that doesn't settle with rest
  • Sharp or catching pain with specific movements
  • Swelling, bruising or tenderness around a joint or muscle
  • A feeling of weakness, instability or 'giving way'
  • Reduced range of motion affecting your sport or training
  • Recurring niggles that keep coming back despite rest
  • Pain that worsens with increased training intensity or volume
  • Difficulty returning to sport after an injury or time off

Common Causes

  • Sudden trauma — twists, falls, collisions and awkward landings
  • Overuse from repetitive training without adequate recovery
  • Poor technique or biomechanics placing excessive load on tissues
  • Inadequate warm-up, cool-down or conditioning
  • Training errors — doing too much, too soon, too fast
  • Worn-out or inappropriate footwear and equipment
  • Muscle imbalances and weakness in key stabilising muscles
  • Returning to sport too quickly after a previous injury

Who Physiotherapy Can Help

Sports physiotherapy is suitable for anyone dealing with pain, injury, or performance issues linked to physical activity. We work with a wide range of individuals — from recreational gym-goers and runners to teenage footballers, weekend cyclists, and competitive athletes.

Whether you're preparing for a marathon or simply want to enjoy a pain-free five-a-side game, our approach is tailored to help you move better, recover effectively, and perform at your best. We also support those looking to improve movement quality, optimise biomechanics, refine running technique, or return to sport safely after time away.

What to Expect

Your Assessment

Your first session begins with a comprehensive assessment of your injury, movement patterns, strength, and overall biomechanics. We'll analyse how your body moves, identify any imbalances or weak areas, and understand the specific demands of your sport or activity.

This may include biomechanical assessment, running gait analysis, strength testing, and sport-specific movement screens. The goal is to pinpoint not just what's injured, but why — so your treatment plan addresses the root cause and reduces the chance of re-injury.

Treatment

We create a tailored treatment plan aligned with your goals — whether that's returning to sport, reducing the risk of re-injury, or improving performance.

Your Timeline

Expected Recovery

Recovery timelines vary depending on the type and severity of your injury, your sport, and how your body responds to treatment. Minor strains and sprains often improve within 2–4 weeks, while more complex injuries or post-surgical rehabilitation may take several months.

We guide you through a staged recovery, ensuring you're strong, stable, and confident before returning to full sport. Many of our patients not only recover but go on to improve their performance and experience fewer injuries over time — because we address the underlying causes, not just the symptoms.

Before You Book

Everything You Need to Know Before Booking

No GP referral needed. Direct access appointments available — often same-day or within a few days.

What Happens at Your First Appointment

Your first session is a 45-minute comprehensive assessment. We start by listening — understanding your symptoms, your history, and what you want to get back to. We then carry out a thorough hands-on physical examination to identify the root cause of your problem. You'll receive a clear explanation of what's going on, a personalised treatment plan, and hands-on treatment begins in that very first session. You leave knowing exactly what's wrong, what we'll do about it, and how long recovery will take.

What Should I Wear?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area we're treating. For knee, hip, or leg problems, shorts are ideal. For shoulder, neck, or back issues, a loose top or vest works well. You'll never be asked to undress beyond what's necessary for examination and treatment, and you'll always be treated with dignity and respect in our private treatment room.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

This depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and your goals. Many patients feel significant improvement within 3–6 sessions. Acute injuries often resolve faster, while long-standing or complex conditions may need more. We'll give you a clear treatment timeline at your first appointment — and we only ever recommend sessions you genuinely need. Our goal is to get you independent and pain-free as quickly as possible, not to keep you coming back.

Can I Claim Through Insurance?

Yes. We are recognised by most major health insurance providers including AXA, Vitality, Bupa, WPA, and Healix. We can bill your insurer directly so you don't need to pay upfront — simply bring your insurance authorisation number to your appointment. If you're not sure whether you're covered, call us and we'll help you check before you book.
