Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common problems we treat at Complete Recovery Physio in Marple. Whether you're struggling with acute lower back pain, sciatica, upper back tension, disc-related issues, or chronic stiffness, our experienced physiotherapists can help you find lasting relief and regain confidence in your movement.

Understanding Your Condition
Back pain affects around 80% of people at some point in their lives, and it's one of the most common reasons people seek physiotherapy. The good news is that the vast majority of back pain responds extremely well to the right treatment — and the earlier you start, the faster and more complete your recovery tends to be.
At Complete Recovery Physiotherapy in Marple, we don't just treat where it hurts. We carry out a thorough assessment to identify the root cause of your back pain, then build a personalised plan that combines hands-on treatment, targeted strengthening, and practical advice to get you pain-free and keep you that way.

What You Feel
- Lower back muscle strains & joint stiffness
- Sciatica and nerve irritation

- Pregnancy-related back pain
- Arthritis and age-related wear
- Sports injuries and overuse
Common Causes
- Poor posture from prolonged sitting, desk work or driving
- Heavy or awkward lifting, especially without proper technique
- Sudden movements, twists or bending that strain the back
- Weak core and glute muscles failing to support the spine
- Tight hip flexors and hamstrings pulling on the lower back
- Degenerative changes such as disc wear and facet joint arthritis
- Sport and training loads without adequate strength and conditioning
- Pregnancy-related postural changes and ligamentous changes
Who Physiotherapy Can Help
We treat back pain in people of all ages and activity levels — from office workers with postural lower back pain, to runners with chronic stiffness, to new mums dealing with pregnancy-related strain, to older adults managing age-related wear and tear.
Whether your back pain is a new, acute episode that came on suddenly, or a long-standing chronic problem that has been bothering you for months or years, physiotherapy can help. Even if you've had back pain for a long time, it's rarely too late to make meaningful improvements — we use a combination of manual therapy, movement retraining, and strength & conditioning to reduce pain, improve function, and rebuild confidence.
Struggling with Back Pain?
Book your assessment today. We'll find the root cause and start hands-on treatment in your first session.
Your Assessment
Your first appointment is a 45-minute comprehensive assessment. We'll start by listening to your story — when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and how it's affecting your life. Then we'll carry out a thorough hands-on examination, assessing your spine's movement, strength, and flexibility, and performing specific tests to identify the exact source of your pain.
By the end of your first session, you'll have a clear understanding of what's causing your back pain, what the treatment plan looks like, and what you can start doing immediately to help yourself. In the vast majority of cases, a detailed physiotherapy assessment is the best first step — and if we feel you need imaging or a GP referral, we'll arrange it quickly for you.
How We Treat It
Our hands-on treatment approach:
- Detailed assessment to identify the root cause of your pain
- Manual therapy & joint mobilisation to restore movement
- Targeted strengthening and core stability programmes
- Posture correction and ergonomic advice
- Soft tissue release and acupuncture (where appropriate)
- Personalised rehabilitation to prevent recurrence
Expected Recovery
Most of our patients notice a significant reduction in pain within the first 2–4 sessions. Acute back pain often improves rapidly with the right treatment, while longer-standing issues usually show steady progress within 4–6 weeks.
We focus on treating the root cause rather than just masking the symptoms, so you're far less likely to experience the same problem returning. We'll also give you the tools and knowledge to manage your back long-term — a simple exercise plan, posture advice, and confidence in knowing what to do if you feel a twinge. The earlier you start treatment, the faster and more complete your recovery tends to be.
Everything You Need to Know Before Booking
No GP referral needed. Direct access appointments available — often same-day or within a few days.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first session is a 45-minute comprehensive assessment. We start by listening — understanding your symptoms, your history, and what you want to get back to. We then carry out a thorough hands-on physical examination to identify the root cause of your problem. You'll receive a clear explanation of what's going on, a personalised treatment plan, and hands-on treatment begins in that very first session. You leave knowing exactly what's wrong, what we'll do about it, and how long recovery will take.
What Should I Wear?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area we're treating. For knee, hip, or leg problems, shorts are ideal. For shoulder, neck, or back issues, a loose top or vest works well. You'll never be asked to undress beyond what's necessary for examination and treatment, and you'll always be treated with dignity and respect in our private treatment room.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
This depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and your goals. Many patients feel significant improvement within 3–6 sessions. Acute injuries often resolve faster, while long-standing or complex conditions may need more. We'll give you a clear treatment timeline at your first appointment — and we only ever recommend sessions you genuinely need. Our goal is to get you independent and pain-free as quickly as possible, not to keep you coming back.
Can I Claim Through Insurance?
Yes. We are recognised by most major health insurance providers including AXA, Vitality, Bupa, WPA, and Healix. We can bill your insurer directly so you don't need to pay upfront — simply bring your insurance authorisation number to your appointment. If you're not sure whether you're covered, call us and we'll help you check before you book.
