ACL Rehabilitation
ACL rehabilitation is the structured, phased recovery that rebuilds your knee after an ACL injury or reconstruction — restoring stability, strength and confidence for a safe return to sport, at our Marple clinic.

Understanding Your Condition
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the key stabilising ligaments in your knee, and injuring it — whether treated with surgery or rehabilitation — requires a structured, phased recovery to restore stability, strength and confidence. Rushing back is the most common cause of re-injury, which is why a properly-progressed programme matters so much.
At Complete Recovery Physiotherapy in Marple, we guide you through every stage of ACL rehabilitation, from settling the initial injury, through rebuilding strength and control, to a confident, tested return to sport. We follow surgeon protocols where relevant and use return-to-sport testing to make sure you're genuinely ready.

What You Feel
- A giving-way sensation or instability in the knee
- Pain and swelling after a twisting injury
- Difficulty trusting the knee on pivoting or changing direction
- Reduced strength and muscle wasting after injury or surgery
- Stiffness or limited bending and straightening
- Pain returning to running, jumping or sport
- Fear of re-injury affecting confidence to play
- A knee that feels unstable on uneven ground
Common Causes
- Sudden twisting or pivoting injury, often in sport
- Landing awkwardly from a jump
- Sudden changes of direction under speed
- Direct collision to the knee
- Returning to sport too quickly after injury or surgery
- Weakness in the hips, quads and hamstrings
- Poor movement control and landing mechanics
- Inadequate rehabilitation after the initial injury
Who Physiotherapy Can Help
ACL rehabilitation is for anyone recovering from an ACL injury — whether you've had a reconstruction, are managing without surgery, or are struggling with ongoing instability after a previous injury. We work with sportspeople of all levels, from weekend footballers to competitive athletes, guiding each person through a safe, structured return to activity.
If you're recovering from an ACL injury or surgery and want to return to sport confidently and safely, a properly-progressed, phased rehabilitation programme is essential.
Struggling with ACL Rehabilitation?
Book your assessment today. We'll find the root cause and start hands-on treatment in your first session.
Your Assessment
Your assessment reviews your injury, your surgical details (if relevant), and where you are in your recovery timeline. We assess your knee stability, movement, strength, swelling and function, and identify any barriers holding you back — including the movement control and strength deficits that cause re-injury.
We set clear, realistic goals and build a phased plan to reach them, coordinating with your surgical team where helpful. You'll always know what stage you're at and what's next.
How We Treat It
Our hands-on treatment approach:
- Assessment to grade your injury and stage of recovery
- Hands-on treatment to restore movement and ease swelling
- Progressive strengthening of the quads, hamstrings and glutes
- Movement control, balance and landing mechanics work
- Running, agility and sport-specific drills
- Return-to-sport testing to confirm readiness and reduce re-injury risk
Expected Recovery
ACL rehabilitation is a journey of around 9–12 months for a full return to sport after reconstruction, though timelines vary. Conservative (non-surgical) recovery can be quicker for less demanding activities. The most important factor is a structured, properly-progressed programme with return-to-sport testing.
Rushing back is the leading cause of re-injury — which is why we test your strength, hop performance and confidence before clearing your return. Most people who follow a structured programme return fully and re-injure far less often than those who don't.
Everything You Need to Know Before Booking
No GP referral needed. Direct access appointments available — often same-day or within a few days.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first session is a 45-minute comprehensive assessment. We start by listening — understanding your symptoms, your history, and what you want to get back to. We then carry out a thorough hands-on physical examination to identify the root cause of your problem. You'll receive a clear explanation of what's going on, a personalised treatment plan, and hands-on treatment begins in that very first session. You leave knowing exactly what's wrong, what we'll do about it, and how long recovery will take.
What Should I Wear?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area we're treating. For knee, hip, or leg problems, shorts are ideal. For shoulder, neck, or back issues, a loose top or vest works well. You'll never be asked to undress beyond what's necessary for examination and treatment, and you'll always be treated with dignity and respect in our private treatment room.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
This depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and your goals. Many patients feel significant improvement within 3–6 sessions. Acute injuries often resolve faster, while long-standing or complex conditions may need more. We'll give you a clear treatment timeline at your first appointment — and we only ever recommend sessions you genuinely need. Our goal is to get you independent and pain-free as quickly as possible, not to keep you coming back.
Can I Claim Through Insurance?
Yes. We are recognised by most major health insurance providers including AXA, Vitality, Bupa, WPA, and Healix. We can bill your insurer directly so you don't need to pay upfront — simply bring your insurance authorisation number to your appointment. If you're not sure whether you're covered, call us and we'll help you check before you book.
