IT Band Syndrome
IT band syndrome causes sharp pain on the outside of the knee, usually during running. We find the cause and rebuild the strength and mechanics that stop the friction at our Marple clinic.

Understanding Your Condition
Iliotibial (IT) band syndrome is a common running injury causing sharp pain on the outside of the knee, typically coming on after a certain distance or during downhill running. The IT band — a tough band running down the outside of the thigh — rubs against the outside of the knee, causing irritation.
The good news is it responds well to physiotherapy. At Complete Recovery Physiotherapy in Marple, we settle the irritation and address the strength, mechanics and training factors causing the friction — so the pain stops and you return to running without it coming back.

What You Feel
- Sharp pain on the outside of the knee during running
- Pain that comes on after a consistent distance
- Discomfort worsening on downhill or downhill running
- Pain that eases with rest and returns with running
- Tenderness over the outside of the knee
- A stinging or burning sensation on the outer knee
- Pain when bending and straightening the knee
- Symptoms that worsen with increased mileage
Common Causes
- Weakness in the hip and glute muscles
- Poor running mechanics and foot strike
- Sudden increases in running distance or intensity
- Running downhill or on cambered roads
- Tightness in the IT band and surrounding muscles
- Poor foot mechanics and overpronation
- Inappropriate or worn-out footwear
- Training errors — too much, too soon, too fast
Who Physiotherapy Can Help
IT band syndrome almost exclusively affects runners — particularly those building mileage, running hills or with hip weakness. We help everyone from new runners to seasoned marathoners, addressing the specific factors driving the friction.
If you feel a sharp pain on the outside of your knee that comes on after a certain distance when running, you likely have IT band syndrome. Targeted treatment gets you back to running pain-free.
Struggling with IT Band Syndrome?
Book your assessment today. We'll find the root cause and start hands-on treatment in your first session.
Your Assessment
Your assessment identifies the factors causing your IT band friction. We assess your hip and glute strength, running mechanics, foot mechanics and flexibility, and review your training and running routes to understand the cause.
IT band syndrome is driven by mechanics, not just the band itself — so finding and fixing your specific factors is key. We'll explain what we've found and build a programme targeting them.
How We Treat It
Our hands-on treatment approach:
- Assessment to identify the factors driving your IT band pain
- Hands-on treatment to ease pain and soft tissue tension
- Strengthening of the hips, glutes and core to improve mechanics
- Running mechanics and cadence advice
- Training and footwear advice to address the cause
- A graded return to running, including hills
Expected Recovery
Most IT band syndrome improves significantly within 4–8 weeks of targeted strengthening and training modification. The key is addressing the underlying mechanics — not just the knee pain — so it doesn't keep returning.
Runners can usually return progressively once hip strength and running mechanics are improved. We guide a graded return to running so you stay pain-free long-term, not just temporarily settled.
Everything You Need to Know Before Booking
No GP referral needed. Direct access appointments available — often same-day or within a few days.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Your first session is a 45-minute comprehensive assessment. We start by listening — understanding your symptoms, your history, and what you want to get back to. We then carry out a thorough hands-on physical examination to identify the root cause of your problem. You'll receive a clear explanation of what's going on, a personalised treatment plan, and hands-on treatment begins in that very first session. You leave knowing exactly what's wrong, what we'll do about it, and how long recovery will take.
What Should I Wear?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area we're treating. For knee, hip, or leg problems, shorts are ideal. For shoulder, neck, or back issues, a loose top or vest works well. You'll never be asked to undress beyond what's necessary for examination and treatment, and you'll always be treated with dignity and respect in our private treatment room.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
This depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and your goals. Many patients feel significant improvement within 3–6 sessions. Acute injuries often resolve faster, while long-standing or complex conditions may need more. We'll give you a clear treatment timeline at your first appointment — and we only ever recommend sessions you genuinely need. Our goal is to get you independent and pain-free as quickly as possible, not to keep you coming back.
Can I Claim Through Insurance?
Yes. We are recognised by most major health insurance providers including AXA, Vitality, Bupa, WPA, and Healix. We can bill your insurer directly so you don't need to pay upfront — simply bring your insurance authorisation number to your appointment. If you're not sure whether you're covered, call us and we'll help you check before you book.
